Whether you’re on the way to work in the morning or need to find your way to the airport, your everyday journeys often rely on some form of transportation service — whether it’s taxis, Uber or public transportation. And while it’s still one of the most convenient ways to get around town, many people overlook taxis and car hires in favor of public transport or ride-hailing apps.

If you’re still on the fence about whether you should be ordering a taxi for your next trip to to the airport — or simply across town — ask yourself these three questions:

How soon do I need a ride?

When many people think of taxis, they picture the stereotypical New York experience of waving down a yellow cab from the curb. This is a great option if you’re hoping to get somewhere at a moment’s notice. However, more than 85% of taxi and limousine rental companies have websites, and more than half of those sites allow you to book your service online. This is often a better option for those living in more suburban areas or who need to be picked up at a specific time.

Is the taxi licensed and safe?

Most cities require all taxi drivers to be licensed with the local government in order to ensure riders’ safety and a standard, affordable fare rate across the board. Before hiring any taxi, be sure they have proof of their licensing readily available. Most cabs will have this information affixed somewhere in their vehicle, and a reputable taxi company should have their licensing information somewhere on their website.

Are there group transportation options?

In a move to make their car services more affordable and competitive with ride-hailing apps, a growing number of taxi companies are offering group transportation that allows you to carpool with other people going to the same place as you. And if you’re traveling in a large group to a wedding or another event, group transportation will allow you to share a large van or even limousine to your destination. In fact, weddings, proms and parties comprise 40% of limousine companies’ business!

As with any type of transportation option, knowing when to take a taxi depends on your needs. And once your decision is made, getting to your final destination will feel like a breeze.
